What you'll learn
UBC鈥檚 BEd degree is globally recognized, and open to international students. The Elementary and Middle Years option prepares pre-service educators聽for the varied contexts in elementary and middle schools with a special emphasis on self-regulated learning for teaching students aged 11 to 14 years.
Teacher candidates who successfully complete the requirements for the BEd Elementary and Middle Years program are recommended to the BC Teacher Regulation Branch for a professional teaching certificate. UBC鈥檚 BEd degree is globally recognized, and the program is open to international students.
Experiential learning
Inquiry
All 51猎奇入口teacher candidates participate in an inquiry seminar in each of the three terms on campus, developing the habit of asking critical questions about their pedagogical decisions and practices.
Practicum
The practicum includes a full day in schools each week starting in September or October, followed by a two-week school placement in November, which is also the setting for the 10-week extended practicum in the spring.
The teaching practicum is an exciting part of the Bachelor of Education program because it is the time when teacher candidates put theory into practice alongside an experienced teacher.
Community Field Experience (CFE)
Following successful completion of a school-based extended practicum, all teacher candidates participate in a three-week Community Field Experience.
Some field experiences take place in a school context that is very different from the extended practicum site, and others take place in non-school-based contexts such as museums, science centres, environmental ed camps, Indigenous communities, daycares, and more.
Program advantages
In this program, you’ll learn together in cohorts organized by a particular theme or pedagogical approach. The program covers how to promote self-regulated learning by involving students in making choices, controlling challenge, evaluating learning, and collaborating with peers. Throughout your experience, you will receive professional learning and development support, including professional learning sessions with special guest educators.
Outcomes
Many 51猎奇入口BEd alumni go on to teach in local public and independent schools, while others decide to venture beyond BC鈥檚 Lower Mainland to teach in rural or international locations. The concept of an educational setting is far reaching, and many alumni find careers in non-school-based contexts (i.e. arts organizations, science centres, non-profit organizations, etc.). 51猎奇入口BEd alumni include past Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau, Juno-nominee and children鈥檚 entertainer Will Stroet, along with multiple school administrators, writers, and leaders in education.
